Bone Grafting New York
At Fifth Avenue Periodontics, a bone graft is typically performed to rebuild or reshape bone that has been destroyed by periodontal disease. Dr. Clifford Melnick may recommend a bone graft in a periodontal pocket to improve the levels of the bone.
During a bone graft procedure, a piece of bone is removed from a part of the jawbone or from another area of the body. This bone is then transplanted to the jawbone to encourage the body’s natural ability to regenerate tissues and bone. Dr. Clifford Melnick grafts the required site with bone and may use a collagen membrane to ensure bone fill. This state-of-the-art technique is called Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR).
In addition to bone grafting for bone loss with periodontal disease, bone grafting may be performed to increase the amount of bone required to support a dental implant. For some patients, up to nine months may be required to grow enough new bone that can support a dental implant. For individuals who only require minor bone grafting, the bone graft may be able to be performed at the same time as the dental implant surgery.
When you have your consultation with Dr. Clifford Melnick, your personal dental case will be reviewed so that Dr. Melnick can best determine which type of bone graft may be right for you.
