Potential Risks and Complications of Dental Implants
Understanding dental implants’ potential complications and risks is imperative if you are considering treatment, as the information can guide your expectations of the procedure and post-operative results. We believe that patients should have as much information about the treatment as possible so that they can make informed decisions on how to proceed. Though rare, potential complications and risks of dental implants include:
- Integration Failure – It is possible that the osseointegration process – the process in which the titanium dental implant root becomes grafted to the jaw bone – can fail during a dental implant procedure. In such cases, the dental implant can be at risk of falling out, functioning improperly, or causing discomfort. This is a rare occurrence, however, and can be rectified with additional treatment.
- Misplacement – In some cases, the dental implant can be misplaced in relation to the surrounding teeth, resulting in clearance and function issues with the crown or dental bridge affixed to the titanium root. Additionally, the dental implant can also cause sinus problems (especially if placed in the upper part of the jaw) if it extends into a sinus cavity. Dr. Melnick has extensive experience with dental implants and will take all precautions to ensure proper placement.
- Tissue Infection or Damage – After the implant is placed into the jaw bone, it is possible that an infection may occur as a result of the procedure. Because a dental crown or bridge will be affixed to the dental implant, the soft gum tissue around the base of the implant may become inflamed or sensitive. At our dental practice, we have extensive experience with the placement of dental implants, and such complications and risks are rare.
- Risk Factors – As with all surgical procedures, the patient’s lifestyle habits will partially dictate the chance of success. Smokers and individuals with immune deficiencies are at greater risk for dental implant complications; however, dental implants have a 95 percent success rate and are a proven treatment for individuals with damaged or missing teeth.
