What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a small post made of titanium which is surgically placed in the jawbone. Titanium is the same surgical-grade material that is used in hip and joint replacement procedures and is well tolerated by the human body. The implant post takes the place of missing tooth’s root, fusing with the bone and providing a strong anchor for a new replacement tooth.
Chewing and speaking ability is restored or improved, and a natural appearance is achieved when implants are used to replace missing teeth. Whether you are missing one tooth or many, dental implants allow you to enjoy your favorite foods and give you the confidence you need to live an active professional and social life.
The Dental Implants Process
To begin the dental implants process, you will visit Dr. Melnick for a thorough consultation. He will clearly explain the entire implant dentistry procedure and review treatment plan alternatives with you so that you can choose the option that is right for you. You may also have a CT scan performed by a radiologist prior to the implant procedure. This scan gives Dr. Melnick an accurate view of the jawbone to use during the implant procedure. Dr. Melnick may also make impressions of your mouth so that a customized surgical stent can be made, which is used as a guide during the implant procedure to ensure exact placement of the post.
Throughout the implant dentistry process, Dr. Melnick will communicate with your general dentist to coordinate your treatment.
Preparation of the Implant Site – Tooth Extraction , Bone Grafting and Guided Tissue Regeneration (GTR)
The success of a dental implant depends on the health of the jawbone prior to placement of the posts. When a tooth needs to be extracted, a special technique is used to preserve the delicate bone around the tooth roots. This bone acts as a scaffold for the bone fill into the socket. Great efforts are taken to preserve this bone when Dr. Melnick extracts teeth which will be future implant sites. A sufficient amount of healthy bone is needed for the implant post to fully integrate into the jawbone. Some patients, specifically those who have been missing teeth for many years, may not have enough healthy bone to support an implant. In such cases, Dr. Melnick can perform a bone grafting procedure to build up the bone at the implant site. During this procedure, he will graft the site with bone and in many cases place a collagen membrane to help ensure bone fill. This procedure is called Guided Tissue Regeneration or GTR.
For patients who come to Dr. Melnick with a badly damaged or decayed tooth, he can coordinate a tooth extraction with the placement of a dental implant. In some cases, he can place the implant post immediately after the tooth extraction. Dr. Melnick is gentle in his approach to tooth extraction and will do whatever he can to make you as comfortable as possible throughout the procedure.

Once the initial consultation and any necessary bone grafting or tooth extraction procedures have been completed, you will visit Dr. Melnick for the surgical placement of the implant posts. This oral surgery procedure is performed under local anesthetic so that you will not feel any discomfort while Dr. Melnick places the implant into the jawbone. It will take several months for the jawbone to fully heal while the bone fuses with the post, a process called osseointegration. Once healing is complete, you will return to your restorative dentist to have a natural-looking replacement tooth placed on the implant post.
