Dental Pain Management

At Fifth Avenue Periodontics, Dr. Clifford Melnick and his team are committed to patient comfort and a pain-free experience.  We understand that many of our patients may be fearful of certain procedures and treatments because of previous experiences, however, we take every effort to minimize pain while at our Manhattan office.

We use state-of-the-art technology to ensure that pain is managed during dental procedures.  Some of this technology includes:

  • Oraqix- Oraqix is a topic anesthetic agent that Dr. Clifford Melnick uses for pain control in a variety of periodontal treatments.  Oraqix combines lidocaine and prilocaine with a thermosetting system for pain relief in needed locations.  No needle is required with the Oraqix process, and allows for a patient to feel completely comfortable and pain-free during an entire dental treatment.
  • Dentalvibe- with many dental procedures, a numbing injection may be necessary.  However, the injection can be extremely painful for a patient.  With Dentalvibe, a vibrating comfort tip is placed at the injection site.  After a few seconds of a “pleasant tickling sensation,” Dr. Clifford Melnick will be able to administer the injection with no pain.  It is reported that most patients do not feel the injection at all, and can be comfortably numb during treatment.

The addition of Oraqix and Dentalvibe to regular dental and periodontal care allows for patients to remain comfortable throughout a visit to the dentist. Dr. Clifford Melnick always stays up-to-date with the latest technology and dental techniques to decrease patient recovery time and pain levels. To experience the Fifth Avenue Perio difference for yourself, please contact our Manhattan dental office today.

Receding Gums

Gum Recession and Your Oral Health

Gum recession is the process where the margin of the gum tissue that embeds a tooth starts to wear away.  When this occurs, more of a tooth or a tooth root can be exposed.  Gum recession is one of the first signs of gum disease.  The gaps that form between the teeth and gum line allow for disease-causing bacteria to begin building. If gum recession is left untreated, supporting tissues and bone structures of the teeth can become damaged.  In-turn, tooth loss may occur as a result of the damaged structures.

Many individuals do not know that they are experiencing gum recession, as it is a gradual process.  Regular visits with Dr. Clifford Melnick can ensure that gum recession is monitored and addressed. In addition, preventative care can be initiated to help maintain gum health.

At our Manhattan office, we offer a wide array of services aimed to keep your gums healthy, and to address any gum issues that may have developed.  These services include:

  • Scaling and root planing (deep cleaning under the gum line to remove embedded calculus or tartar and toxins on the root surface).  This is generally done with local anesthesia to numb the area.
  • Non-surgical chemotherapeutic treatment.  ( Use of antibiotics under the gum line to treat localized gum pockets)
  • Surgical gum disease treatment
  • Comprehensive gum care maintenance
  • Surgical and non-surgical CO2 laser treatments

During a visit with Dr. Clifford Melnick, all of your gum treatment options will be discussed with you in depth.  If left untreated, gum recession can lead to major oral health issues, including periodontal diseases.  Dr. Clifford Melnick works with you to create a periodontal plan that keeps your gums healthy, and away from future problems that can impact your oral and overall health.

Dr. Clifford Melnick and Gum Recontouring

At Fifth Avenue Periodontics, gum recontouring is used for a variety of procedures to help patients achieve their desired results.  Dr. Clifford Melnick uses the latest state-of-the-art dental technology and lasers to transform the gum line.  Gum recontouring is most commonly used to:

  • Cover any black lines due to exposed crown margins.
  • Retreat the gums found with gummy smiles.
  • Add gum with connective tissue grafting.  In this procedure, the gum is moved from a palate donor site to an area that is lacking gum tissue.
  • Aid with lateral pedicle grafts.  Through this gum recontouring procedure, the gum is moved from an adjacent tooth to add gum tissue over an exposed tooth root.

All of these procedures can provide our patients with the smile lines that are highly desirable.  During a consultation, Dr. Clifford Melnick will learn more about your individual concerns with your smile, and perform a detail evaluation.  Through this analysis, Dr. Melnick will be able to determine if you could benefit from gum recontouring, and what results you can expect from the procedure.

Dental Technology

Cone Beam Scanner Technology

We have all had those dental experiences that we wish could be forgotten.  Just thinking about those dental office experiences where nothing seems up to date, the tools are archaic, and you keep thinking to yourself, “There has to be an easier way to have this dental procedure done.”

Dr. Clifford Melnick understands the need and the importance of dental technology.  This is why he is committed to offering his patients unparalleled dental services with state-of-the-art procedures and techniques.  Through this blog, you will learn about one of the newest additions used with Dr. Melnick’s practice, the Conebeam Scanner.  Find out more about what this technology can do for you and your needs!

What Is the Conebeam Scanner?

The Conebeam Scanner is used as an imaging device before dental implant treatments.  It allows for Dr. Clifford Melnick to:

  • View structures and any features of abnormal anatomy
  • Minimize risk by delivering more predictable outcomes
  • Allow for Dr. Melnick to plan accurately and effectively to reduce invasiveness of surgery and recovery time
  • Gives Dr. Clifford Melnick a 3-D view of a patient’s jawbone and other structures to ensure proper implant placement

Dr. Clifford Melnick considers the Conebeam Scanner to be an invaluable tool in implant planning.  The 3-D cone beam images yield complete images that provide more details than X-rays, and use less radiation that ordinary CT scan machines.   The Conebeam uses spatial resolution to capture hard bones in the images, with quicker scan times than traditional scans.

This dental technology allows Dr. Clifford Melnick to evaluate the jaw before dental implants, and make personalized modifications to a patient’s individual needs.  With more detailed and accurate planning before surgery, Dr. Clifford Melnick can take additional details into account to minimize recovery time post-surgery.  To learn more about this wave of dental technology, please contact Fifth Avenue Periodontics in New York today.

Crown Lengthening

What Is Crown Lengthening?

Crown lengthening is a procedure that lengthens the clinical crown of the tooth so that a tooth can be sealed and bacteria cannot enter when the general dentist makes the crown(cap).  Patients who suffer from a tooth that has broken or decayed below the gum line can have their teeth saved from extraction and additional damage.   In addition, when a tooth is broken down from a fracture, crown lengthening can create more length to make space for reconstruction.

Through this blog, Dr. Clifford Melnick will address what a crown lengthening procedure requires.  Patients will be able to understand the purpose of crown lengthening procedures, and learn more about the crown lengthening procedure process.

All about Crown Lengthening

Patients can require a crown lengthening procedure to remove gum tissue and bone surround the teeth to expose a healthier tooth below.  Excess gum tissue is removed and small incisions are made so that the surrounding bone can also be reduced.  Patients who undergo a crown lengthening procedure that is assisted with soft-tissue lasers can expect to experience less healing time and little pain during the recovery process.

Procedures for crown lengthening that utilize CO2 dental lasers are safe and effective for all patients, including those with health restrictions including: pregnancy, pacemakers, and organ transplants.  The Deka Ultraspeed CO2 Dental Laser yields reduced recovery times and a decrease in the need for sutures and extensive aesthetics.  Some local anesthetics may be used during the time of the procedure to ensure that a patient is comfortable throughout the entire dental surgery.

Crown lengthening is a common surgical procedure, and can be completed require little recovery time with an expert such as Dr. Clifford Melnick.  Within weeks, the gum line can heal properly to allow for other restorative dentistry procedures to take place.  After the procedure is completed, a more decay-free tooth surface is accessible, which allows for a dental crown or filling to be placed without the risk of irritation or infection.

With Dr. Melnick, patients can relax knowing that they are with a dentist who cares about comfort, quality care, and satisfaction. Learn more about why you should consider Dr. Melnick for all of your periodontal  procedure needs by contacting our New York office today.

All about Gum Tissue Grafting

Why Is Gum Grafting Necessary?

Gum grafting can be a necessary procedure to help protect the teeth from gum recession, or to improve a smile’s appearance.  If gum recession is not addressed, tooth loss can result. Through this blog, you will learn the basics about gum grafts, and find out more information about Dr. Clifford Melnick’s commitment to excellence in periodontal care.

Gum Grafting and Your Oral Health

When there is a lack of gingiva, the tissue becomes more likely to recede. An exposed tooth root can be a result of gum recession, and gum graft surgery repairs the issue and prevents additional loss.  In-turn, there can be reduced tooth sensitivity and improved aesthetics with gum grafts.

If gum issues are not treated, then tooth loss can result yielding more extensive dental treatments.   A gum graft can cover an exposed tooth root protecting the tooth from further recession while also transforming the aesthetics of the smile.

At Fifth Avenue Periodontics, we use dental techniques and procedures that yield the most painless and effective procedures.  Connective tissue grafts are one of the most common gum grafting procedures that are performed in Dr. Melnick’s office.  With connective tissue grafts, there is virtually no pain that is associated from the donor site as the internal tissue blends with the recipient site.

In addition, Dr. Melnick performs pedicle grafting, a procedure where gum tissue is taken from an adjacent area and slid into the area that requires more gingiva.

Dr. Melnick is passionate about helping his patients combat gum and periodontal disease.  In addition to gum grafting, Dr. Melnick offers basic tips to ward off gum disease, including:

  • Brush teeth at least twice per day
  • Floss everyday
  • Visit the dentist form routine appointments
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Quit smoking—learn how, http://www.smokefree.gov/
  • Visit a periodontist as needed for periodontal cleanings and preventative dental care.

During a consultation, Dr. Clifford Melnick performs an oral examination to gain more insight into the necessary individualized treatments that may be required.  Dr. Melnick takes the time to explain every step of the processes so that patients feel comfortable during the entire time in the dentist’s chair.
