Improving Smiles

Periodontist Manhattan

Periodontal Specialist

Dr. Cliff Melnick is a periodontist in New York City. A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gum disease. Periodontists are experts in performing gum surgery, dental implants, gum grafting and tissue contouring. Periodontists receive three additional years of specialized training after dental school. Dr. Melnick received his Certificate in Periodontics from Columbia University. Dr. Melnick employs the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease for his patients in Manhattan.

Dr. Melnick often treats more problematic periodontal cases, such as those with severe gum disease, bone and tooth loss. Periodontists offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (in which the infected surface of the root is cleaned), and root surface debridement (in which damaged tissue is removed). They can also treat patients with severe gum problems using a variety of surgical procedures. In addition, periodontists are specially trained in the placement, maintenance, and repair of dental implants.

Studies show that periodontal disease is linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and stroke. In diabetes, studies report that gum disease is a complication of diabetes, makes it more difficult to control blood sugar, and increases the risk of complications from diabetes. Research has confirmed that men with gum disease were 49% more likely to develop kidney cancer, 54% more likely to develop pancreatic cancer and 30% more likely to develop blood cancers.

During the first visit at his New York City periodontal practice, Dr. Melnick reviews the patient’s complete medical and dental histories. It is extremely important for Dr. Melnick to be aware of all medications being taken and whether the patient is being treated for any condition that can affect periodontal health and care, such as heart disease, diabetes, or pregnancy.

Periodontist Dr. Cliff Melnick examines the gums, checks to see if there is any gum line recession, assesses how the teeth fit together when biting, and checks the teeth to see if any are loose. Periodontist Dr. Cliff Melnick will also take a small measuring instrument called a probe and place it between the teeth and gums to determine the depth of those spaces, known as periodontal pockets. This helps the periodontist assess the health of the gums. X-rays may also be taken to observe the health of the bone below the gum line.

Who should see a periodontist?

For some New York City dental patients, periodontal needs can be managed by employing a thorough at home dental cleaning regimen, and more frequent professional cleaning. Importantly, as more and more patients are exhibiting signs of periodontal disease, coupled with research that suggests a relationship between periodontal disease and other chronic diseases of aging, periodontal treatment necessitates a greater understanding and increased level of expertise of a trained specialist. New York City patients who present with moderate or severe levels of periodontal disease, or patients with more complex cases, are best managed in partnership with Dr. Cliff Melnick.

Dr. Cliff Melnick has been a practicing periodontics in New York City for 30 years. Dr. Melnick has been voted one of America’s Best Dentist in 2016. Dr. Melnick is dedicated keeping current on the science and finding the best dental technology to ensure the highest level of periodontal care for his patients.

All about Gum Tissue Grafting

Why Is Gum Grafting Necessary?

Gum grafting can be a necessary procedure to help protect the teeth from gum recession, or to improve a smile’s appearance.  If gum recession is not addressed, tooth loss can result. Through this blog, you will learn the basics about gum grafts, and find out more information about Dr. Clifford Melnick’s commitment to excellence in periodontal care.

Gum Grafting and Your Oral Health

When there is a lack of gingiva, the tissue becomes more likely to recede. An exposed tooth root can be a result of gum recession, and gum graft surgery repairs the issue and prevents additional loss.  In-turn, there can be reduced tooth sensitivity and improved aesthetics with gum grafts.

If gum issues are not treated, then tooth loss can result yielding more extensive dental treatments.   A gum graft can cover an exposed tooth root protecting the tooth from further recession while also transforming the aesthetics of the smile.

At Fifth Avenue Periodontics, we use dental techniques and procedures that yield the most painless and effective procedures.  Connective tissue grafts are one of the most common gum grafting procedures that are performed in Dr. Melnick’s office.  With connective tissue grafts, there is virtually no pain that is associated from the donor site as the internal tissue blends with the recipient site.

In addition, Dr. Melnick performs pedicle grafting, a procedure where gum tissue is taken from an adjacent area and slid into the area that requires more gingiva.

Dr. Melnick is passionate about helping his patients combat gum and periodontal disease.  In addition to gum grafting, Dr. Melnick offers basic tips to ward off gum disease, including:

  • Brush teeth at least twice per day
  • Floss everyday
  • Visit the dentist form routine appointments
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Quit smoking—learn how, http://www.smokefree.gov/
  • Visit a periodontist as needed for periodontal cleanings and preventative dental care.

During a consultation, Dr. Clifford Melnick performs an oral examination to gain more insight into the necessary individualized treatments that may be required.  Dr. Melnick takes the time to explain every step of the processes so that patients feel comfortable during the entire time in the dentist’s chair.

Periodontal Care and Cleanings

Your Oral Health

How often do you take the time to think about your oral health?  How often do you think about the status of your gums and teeth?  How often do you consider the risks of periodontal disease?

While you might not always consider the implications of plaque and gingivitis on your overall health, Dr. Clifford Melnick, your New York periodontal expert, can give you the insight about your periodontal health.  Through this blog, the basics of periodontal health are addressed so that you have a clear understanding of the importance of regular periodontal maintenance.

Periodontics and Dr. Clifford Melnick

Dental cleanings are essential to maintaining periodontal health and can make a dramatic difference in the health of gums, tissue, and the overall health of the mouth. This treatment in-turn can decrease the patient’s risk of developing periodontitis, periodontal disease, and gum disease.  At Fifth Avenue Periodontics, periodontal cleanings are part of first step of treatment.

It takes approximately 3 months for bacterial colonies to reform and become destructive.  During a consultation, Dr. Clifford Melnick will evaluate if you should be on a 3, 4, or a 6-month interval for dental cleanings depending on your own periodontal health.  These periodontal cleanings reach below the gum line, resulting in a deep clean that can reduce the risk of pocket formation. For new patients, treatments are non-surgical to start, and then progress to surgical procedures if necessary.

Root planing removes calculus (tartar) on the tooth root where the germs gather the most.  Removing these spots can help remove the bacteria contributing to gum disease. Root scaling is the process of scraping tartar from above and below the gum line.  These processes remove tartar to keep gum disease at bay. In addition, antibiotics may be placed under the gum line for patients with early pocketing to reduce bacterial buildup underneath the gum line.

If the non-surgical procedures are not successful after a checkup a few weeks later, then Dr. Melnick will discuss possible surgical procedures that may be able to produce results.

There is virtually no pain with periodontal cleaning procedures, though Dr. Clifford Melnick might numb the area for enhanced comfort.  During a consultation, Dr. Melnick will review your periodontal health and advise you if periodontal treatments are necessary.  Our dental team’s main goal is to help you minimize your risk of tooth loss, and keep your smile as beautifully healthy as possible.

Ways to Prevent Gum Disease

Gum Disease and Periodontitis

Oral health is not always considered the number one priority when it comes to overall well being.  However, the mouth, teeth, and gums all play an important role and require proper care to maintain both oral and general health.  In fact, it has been reported that poor oral health is connected to a host of other risk factors including cardiac, stroke, and diabetes risks.

Dr. Clifford Melnick helps patients take control of oral health to decrease the risk of illnesses that can affect overall health.  Through this blog, ways to prevent gum disease are discussed.  Keep reading to find out more about how you can improve your health and wellness with some periodontal tips from Dr. Clifford Melnick.

Preventing Gum Disease

The best ways to prevent gum disease are to start with the basics. By focusing on oral health, teeth and gums can stay at their healthiest in-turn decreasing the risk for other complications.  Some periodontal tips include:

  • Brush and floss your teeth everyday.  Floss once per day and brush at least twice per day. Take the time to learn how to floss properly for preventative treatment, so that pockets do not form.  Brushing your teeth reaches 80% of your mouth, however, the 20% of the areas that cannot be reached by brushing are the regions that face the most periodontal issues.  Flossing and regular periodontal care address the areas that face the most dental issues.
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet.  Avoid foods that are heavily processed and start cooking complete meals with a variety of seasonal produce.  Foods that are high in sugar content cause increased acid to be released in the mouth, which can lead to more decay.
  • Quit smoking.  Smoking increases the risk of developing periodontal disease, bone loss, and tooth loss.  Tobacco can negatively impact periodontal tissues and lead to gingival and/ or bone recession.  To learn ways to quit smoking, visit: http://www.smokefree.gov/
  • Visit Dr. Clifford Melnick regularly to ensure that your oral health is in check.  The dentist is the primary screening system for a host of oral diseases of which you might not be aware including tooth decay, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

While these basic oral tips are important, your individual periodontal care might need to be more extensive.  At Fifth Avenue Periodontics in Manhattan, we offer a wide variety of treatment options to help maintain or restore your oral health.  Some of our periodontal treatments include:

  • Scaling and Root Planing
  • Non-Surgical Chemotherapeutic Treatment
  • Surgical Treatment
  • Surgical and Non-Surgical Laser Treatment
  • Comprehensive Maintenance

More information about all of our treatments can be found at this link (http://www.fifthaveperio.com/dental-services/gum-disease/ ).  During a consultation, Dr. Melnick will meet with you to help you understand all of your periodontal options.  You can prevent gum disease or restore your oral health with Dr. Clifford Melnick.
