Dental implants are titanium cylinders which are placed into the jawbone to support crowns, bridges and/or dentures.  When teeth are lost due to decay or periodontal disease, there is attrition or resorption of the bone over time.  In patients with long-standing dentures, the pressure of the denture on the gums over time will cause loss of the underlying bone structure.
