Advantages of Laser Dentistry
Written by: Dr. Clifford Melnick, DMD
It wasn’t that long ago that laser technology seemed to be primarily the province of science fiction films and futuristic devices beyond the reach of the average person. Nowadays, however, lasers are virtually everywhere, influencing nearly every aspect of our lives. From grocery store checkout counters to airport security checkpoints, lasers cannot be avoided.
Thankfully, advanced laser technology has also revolutionized dentistry, making a wide range of procedures more efficient and effective than ever before. At Fifth Avenue Periodontics, the practice of Clifford S. Melnick, DMD, in New York, cosmetic dentistry, restorative dentistry, and implant dentistry can all be performed to the highest standard possible thanks in part to safe, advanced dental lasers.
The CO2 Laser
At our Manhattan laser dentistry practice, we use a highly precise carbon dioxide laser in a variety of soft tissue procedures. This laser uses carbon dioxide gas to safely and accurately target soft tissues without penetrating too deeply, thereby ensuring that surrounding healthy tissues are not affected by treatment. The DEKA UltraSpeed CO2 laser vaporizes diseased tissue and bacteria, sterilizing the area as treatment progresses.
Advantages of Laser Treatment
The dental laser can perform soft tissue procedures with far greater precision than analog dental tools, such as drills and chisels. In particular, periodontal (gum) treatments can be performed with much less bleeding and swelling, sometimes without the need for anesthetics or sutures. There is less risk of post-procedural infection with laser dentistry at our New York practice, and healing times are often dramatically shorter. Our New York laser dentistry professionals have a greater measure of control during procedures, while our patients experience far greater comfort.
Our dental laser can be used on most patients, including those who are pregnant and those who suffer from diabetes. Only patients on oxygen are generally precluded as candidates for laser dentistry.
Laser Dentistry Procedures
Lasers are used in both cosmetic and restorative dental procedures at Fifth Avenue Periodontics. Dr. Melnick uses lasers to perform cosmetic gum surgery, in which he masterfully reshapes periodontal tissues to improve the appearance of “gummy” smiles. Using only a laser, he can lend proportion and aesthetic balance to smiles in which the surfaces of teeth are obscured by excess gum tissue.
Dr. Melnick also uses lasers as part of dental implant procedures, uncovering the dental implant posts after they have healed into place so that custom-crafted crowns, bridges, or dentures can be attached. The CO2 laser is also used in flap surgery, treatment of canker sores and herpes, and even the removal of benign periodontal tumors.
These are just a few of the procedures in which the CO2 laser can be employed. Truly, our dental laser is one of the most versatile and advanced tools ever to be integrated into our state-of-the-art office.
